Text Box: WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Pam Stevenson 864431

Do you know the words to Jerusalem? Could you hum along to the tune? Could you stand and mime? Then come along and try a free “taster”
evening at South Darenth and Horton Kirby W.I.

We have a wide-ranging programme coming up in 2007, with guest speakers coming to talk on topics from Photography to Cruise-directing, Tiller Girls to Chocolate making and social events sprinkled in for good measure.

We meet on third Thursday of every month, 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall, Horton Road. It’s a brave first step to go to a new group alone, but you’ll receive a very warm welcome and you never know, you might enjoy it!

Text Box: Over 60s Social Club Bet Groombridge 01474 705750
Formerly the Darby & Joan Club, this long-standing village institution is in danger of closing for want of a new organiser. Bet Groombridge has been running the club for 14 years but now in her 80th year has decided it is time for someone younger to take the helm. Ring Bet if you can help. More members are also needed to revitalise the Tuesday afternoon club that meets in the village hall from 1 pm.
Text Box: 121 Youth Befriending is a charity that recruits and trains volunteers from the local community to support young people aged between 6 and 16.
121 receives an increasing number of referrals for young people who need that all-important ‘role model’ in their lives. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and all ages. Our oldest volunteer is 80 years young! They are all trained and receive on- going support. Our volunteers enjoy it so much since it gives them a chance to “give something to a child who really needs it” as one volunteer put it. They fulfil the role of a surrogate grandparent or are just a good friend. Having a non-judgemental friend gives these young people the help they need to make decisions about their own lives. One young person tells us that his Befriender “never moans or tells me off but he shows me how I can make things better and feel good about myself”.
We always need more volunteers willing to come forward and be a
Befriender. Could you give a young person that help and support? If so please call Kelly Chambers on 01322 294005.
