Paper Mill Site and Chimney
More than 750 people signed the petition in support of retaining the chimney. The parish council sent it to English Heritage in support of its request to get the structure Listed. If the chimney is retained, the cost of maintaining the building will have to be met from somewhere. The developer of the site may well look to the community to pay for this and current annual costs are, according to the Paper Mill accountant, £5,000. If the parish council has to pay that will be about £4.30 per band D property per year. Contrary to the statement in the Swanley Messenger, the parish council has not yet made any decision, nor even discussed, the setting up of a community fund to "save the stack" The Council is however wholeheartedly in favour of keeping it.
