Text Box: St. Mary’s Church Horton Kirby - Two new bells.
On Friday 20th April two new bells for the Church were cast at the Whitechapel Foundry. This was the most extraordinary event – the Foundry is reached through a small, almost Dickensian, shop front and the whole process is as un mechanised as possible or even probable! Copper and Tin are heated for hours until they are so molten they run like water. The hoists are worked by men pulling chains who communicate in some unspoken way – fantastic to witness – and the molten metal poured into the bell moulds which have again been created using old skills and techniques. Wonderful smells and interesting smoke patterns rising from the newly cast bells completed the experience.
Five bells were cast on the day: two of approx. 3 cwt for Horton Kirby, 2 slightly larger for Wendover Church and a smaller bell for a school in Crockenhill. These 5 were then left to cool over the weekend before being freed from the moulds.
On Sat 21st April, we rang the last peal on the six bells prior to the augmentation. This included a member of the Horton Kirby band who has recently moved away and it was her first peal – a real achievement. The peal was 5040 changes with 7 different methods being rung in a time of 2hrs 36mins.
Work starts on Monday 25 June to put the new frame in and move two existing bells so the two new trebles can be installed probably the following week. There is a lot of help being given locally by the ringers under the direction of a bellhanger from the Whitechapel foundry.
With grateful thanks from all at St Mary’s for help and support in this project which we hope will bring pleasure to all who can enjoy the joyous sound of a full octave of bells. Lesley Barclay 860388
