Local History Society                               Keith Saunderson 862056

Keith Saunderson is still having some difficulty with the forthcoming book on the Paper Mill.  He would dearly like to hear from anyone who worked there who has a story to tell.  This might be an interesting or
amusing incident or it might just be about everyday life working there.  With some 450 people working there in the 1960s/1970s there must be a number who could add interest to the book, so please contact him.

Another book that is being considered is on the War Memorial in St Mary's Church.  This will provide some background and details of the men who died in the two World Wars.  Any information you can give about these men would be useful as there are a lot of people living locally who would like to hear about these people.

Keith Saunderson said: "Some weeks ago we were asked if we knew the
location of the
V2 rocket that fell in this district on 8 March 1945.  We
established that it fell on the slope opposite the end of Rabbits Road looking towards Longfield.  Apparently it used to be marked by a circle of chalk but this has disappeared due to ploughing.

"We are hoping to have the opportunity of having a tour of Franks Hall when Findlays move out and we will be receiving some more of their booklets on the Hall."

The Society's book on the "Memories of Schools in Horton Kirby" is selling well but copies are still available.  If you know anyone who went to school there, please let them know about the book.

DOORSTEP SELLING,  COLLECTIONS AND OFFERS OF WORK

Kent Trading Standards want to raise awareness particularly amongst the elderly of rogue doorstep traders.  Often they say that they've noticed roof tile problems which need urgent attention and then, with or without permission, start work and demand payment or they offer to do clearance work which will then end up in a layby! If you are approached, turn them away and call Trading Standards on 0845 3450210 immediately.  Also, don't be taken in by leaflets from unknown "charities" that want your clothes
donations.  They are companies who sell for private profit--
look at the small print on the flyer!
