An economic Steering Group comprising representatives from local interests has been set up recently. It hopes to help find an economically viable way for the most important mill buildings and features to remain. The Group also wants to bring the whole site back into mixed economic use, provide the landlord with an income and create local employment.
DOORSTEP RECYCLING SCHEME
At last we have become part of the District Council's doorstep recycling scheme. If your household hasn't been supplied with a roll of clear sacks for paper, plastic bottles and tins (glass must still be taken to the bottles banks and green waste is still separated for doorstep collection in green sacks), call SDC on 01732 227000. The bags are huge and seem plenty big enough if cans, cardboard boxes, and bottles are crushed first but if you do need more, a roll of 20 sacks can be bought for 50p from the parish office.
VILLAGE PANTOMIME
We are looking for people to take part in the next Village Pantomime taking place at the end of January 2004. Would you like to be part of this mad team? Acting or doing back stage in the production of Hickory, Dickory and the Super Bug. Please contact Barbara Bradley on 01322 862005 for more information.
CENTENARY BOOK
We have a lot of newcomers to the parish who might not know that in 1994 the Parish Council published a local history book "Pictures and Memories of 100 Years 1894 - 1994". It is a fascinating and comprehensive record of life in our 2 villages and was described by Clive Page, Kentish Times reviewer as "easily the best parish history type book I've come across." The Journal of Kent History agreed that this was "one of the best" of the not inconsiderable books prompted by the 1994 centenary and that "any one who has lived in Horton Kirby and South Darenth will want to own this book" Is this enough to make you want to fight your way to the front of the queue to buy one of the last 8 copies that we have. They are £9 each. Call in to the parish office at the Village Hall if you would like to buy one.
